Students Win Sustainability Award For AI Assisted Trashing Sorting Bin
Sustainability Award
REYKJAVIK, June 23 - Congratulations to Daníel Logi Matthíasson Eva María Hönnud. Sigurthórsd., Kjartan Freyr Hafthórsson, Ólafur Gunnar Daníelsson, and Unnar Freyr Arnthórsson who were selected for the Sustainable Institute and Forum's Student Award in Sustainability for their work developing an AI-assisted trash sorting mechanism named the Epoch Smart Bin.
The problem the students tackled was the inefficient recycling choices made by people in their daily lives. Each day people face the hard decision of determining what items are recyclable, adding the pressure of having to decide this in public with limited time, and the wrong decision is likely to occur. The students designed an automatic recycling bin to address the recycling issue.
The bin was designed with sensors to sort waste into various recycling categories. The prototype bin developed achieved an accuracy of 69% with sensors and 89% with the addition of AI. The group is eager to continue their work on the project, going further and bringing an Epoch Smart Bin to public spaces.
