PhD Candidate Brandon Velasquez, a recipient of a SIF PhD grant, has embarked on a journey to revolutionize the aluminum production process. He seeks to transform aluminum reduction cells to integrate carbon capture and sequestration technologies, reducing the industry's environmental footprint. Brandon's research harnesses the power of computational fluid dynamics modeling, setting the stage for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

In April, experts from Cornell University and Reykjavik University met for a symposium on sustainability collaboration. This gathering yielded a great collection of innovative ideas. From harnessing the Earth's geothermal energy to capturing carbon with blue-green algae, the symposium showcased the significant collaboration to come between both institutions.

Third-year Applied Energy/Mechanical Engineering students took on the ambitious Geysir Model Project. Guided by Associate Professor Michael S. Moorhead and Director of the Iceland School of Energy Juliet Newson, these students designed and constructed a geyser model, showcasing nature's beauty and power. This practical project stands as a testament to the importance of hands-on education in shaping tomorrow's sustainability leaders.

The SIF Annual Strategy Meeting in March 2022 strengthened the organization's commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainability Institute and Forum is poised to make an even more significant impact in the future. The SIF Annual Meeting celebrated the expansion of the institute's membership and announced the 2022 grants and awards. These awards serve as an inspiring sign for research projects that will shape our world, such as the exploration of microplastic transport to the Vatnajökull Ice Cap and the development of drone-based water samplers for microplastics research.

The 2022 SIF Annual Report is a beacon of the power of collaboration, innovation, and the human spirit. These are just a few of the stories and projects that are in the report. As the world grapples with climate change and environmental degradation challenges, the Sustainability Institute and Forum remains a beacon for progress, leading us towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
