Abstract:

Electrification stands as the primary choice for decarbonisation efforts, yet its application is not always technically viable or cost-effective. Industries facing significant decarbonization challenges, such as hard-to-abate industrial sectors (eg steel, cement, fertilizer) as well as heavy-duty transport (eg trucks, maritime, aviation) require alternative solutions. Hydrogen or hydrogen-derived fuels (commonly known as e-fuels) emerge as crucial elements for transitioning away from fossil fuels in this demanding context.

To successfully manage this transition, efficient and affordable electrochemical technologies (fuel cells and electrolysers) become essential.

Dr. Marta Gandiglio and Dr. Paolo Marocco of the Department of Energy at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy), will present their research activities in the hydrogen field, covering the green hydrogen supply chain from production to end-uses . The presentation will delve into the main research projects where the STEPS group (Synergies of Thermo-chemical and Electro-chemical Power Systems) is involved.

BIOS:

Marta-GandoglioDr. Marta Gandiglio, Assistant Professor, Department of Energy, Polytechnic of Turin (Italy)

PhD in Energy Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino. She is a member of the research group STEPS. Her research activity is linked to the world of hydrogen and fuel cells (high and low temperature fuel cells, PEMFC, SOFC, MCFC, production and use of green hydrogen), as well as biofuels and in particular biogas (from agricultural, industrial and wastewater waste streams). She has worked on the modeling level (system modeling, techno-economic analyses, optimizations, and feasibility studies) and also at an experimental level (design, operation and data analysis of innovative industrial plants). She is responsible for the Energy and Renewable Energy Course and collaborator in the Polygeneration and Advanced Energy Systems Course. She is involved in several European projects including AMPS, DEMOSOFC, REMOTE, TULIPS, COMSOS. Collaborations with research centers (eg, VTT, Imperial College, UC Irvine) and companies such as Cogne Acciai Speciali (steel industry), Azimut (maritime sector) and Alstom (railway sector). She is a project reviewer for the EU commission (Clean Hydrogen Initiative) and an External Expert for the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

PhD in Energy Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino. He is a member of the research group STEPS. His main research activities are related to energy system optimization , modeling of hydrogen-based power-to-power (P2P) and power-to-gas (P2G) systems and experimental analysis of fuel cells and electrolysers (both at low and high temperatures) . He collaborates on the following university courses: Applied thermodynamics and heat transfer; Energy and renewable sources. He is involved in several European projects including REMOTE, HYDRA, CRAVEH2, COMSOS, ICO2CHEM, GREENHY. He also collaborates with research centers (eg, SINTEF, CERTH, ETH, CONICET) and companies (eg Leonardo, Alstom, Enel Green Power) in various research activities on green hydrogen production, storage and use. He is active as External Expert for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
