28.9.2018

In the latest rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE) of the best universities in the world, Reykjavik University (RU) ranks third to sixth in terms of scientific citations, along with Stanford University, MIT and Brandeis University. The citations indicator is an estimate of how often other scientists cite the findings of Reykjavik University scientists in peer-reviewed outlets. RU also moves up THE’s list of the best universities in the world overall, and is now in the top 350.

Ari Kristinn Jonsson, President of RU, says that these results are extraordinary for the University. “This is clear international testimony of the cutting-edge research that has been built up at the University over the past years and decades,” he says. “The goal of scientific research is for new knowledge to have influence and citations are a good indicator of scientific influence. The fact that RU is now ranked among the most influential universities, is a testimony to the significant role that RU plays on an international level in creating and disseminating new knowledge.”

RU’s score in the category of citations is 99.9, while those universities in first and second place, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology and Brighton and Sussex Medical School, have a score of 100. THE’s list is based on information from Elsevier on approximately 68 million citations in 14 million peer-reviewed journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, books and book chapters that have been published over the past five years. The data is normalised to account for the number of papers published and variations in citation volume between different subject areas.

On the overall THE list of the best universities in the world, RU is in 301st-350th place. RU has moved significantly up the ranks from its in 401st-500th place ranking last year, when RU first appeared on the list. The overall list is based on teaching, research, citations, international output and industry income.

In June of 2018, RU was ranked 89th on THE’s list over the best young universities in the world.
