Tuition Fees

Tuition fees

New students are enrolled in a program once the confirmation and school fees have been paid. If the department decides to accept a student after the formal enrollment has been completed, the student will be given access to the teaching system as soon as the confirmation and school fees have been paid.

Tuition fees for new undergraduate students are always based on full study, except when the defined study plan allows for fewer than 17 ECTS credits in the first semester.

If the student does not pay the confirmation fee, the person's application will be cancelled.

Please note that tuition fees are per semester, and there are generally two semesters in each academic year. However, graduate programmes are three semesters for the School of Business, except Executive MBA).

Fees are stated in Icelandic Krona (ISK).

As noted above, University fees generally do not rise above general price increases. University fees associated with university cost increases are likely to change from year to year, so you should use the university fee pdf as a guide only.

Rules

Collection

Tuition fees are collected specifically for each semester. The fees are based on cash payment and shall be paid by the final due date corresponding to each semester and according to the fee list current at that time.

The collection of tuition fees is based on a student's registration status on the first day of a semester as per the current university fee list for that semester.

If tuition fees are paid after the final due date, students will be required to pay a collection fee, a late payment fee, and interest on late payments, calculated from the final tuition due date.

Right to study

If a student does not pay their tuition fees by the final due date, the University reserves the right to cancel the registration and forfeit a student's right to begin or continue studies at RU.

If a student has not paid their tuition fees within 30 days of the final due date, they will be de-registered from their programme, and all access to exams, the intranet, and the learning management system of the university will be closed.

In the event of a past-due balance of tuition fees, enrolment for subsequent terms will not be allowed.

First-year students

All first-year students entering the University must pay a non-refundable confirmation fee. This payment will be applied to the university fee bill. Students will not be enrolled for courses until they have paid their confirmation and tuition fees.

The final due date for first-year student tuition is the same as the final due date for other students, per the current fee list 2024-2025.

Confirmation fees are not refunded after the final due date stated on the current fee list.

First-year students – late enrolment

If a department decides to admit a student after the formal enrolment period has concluded, the student will receive access to the University's learning management system after they have paid their confirmation and tuition fees.

First-year students who are admitted after the final due date of the confirmation fee, as stated by the current fee list, must pay the confirmation fee within three days of receiving confirmation of admittance.

Confirmation fees collected after the final due date for confirmation fees, as stated in the current fee list, are not refundable.

Changes in course registration after the first day of a semester

Dropping courses after the first day of a semester, as stated in the current fee list, does not affect the amount of tuition fees. However, if students add courses, an increase in fees may occur if students are not initially paying full-time tuition fees.

  • Requests for changes in course registration should be sent to registry@ru.is

Permission to lower and refund tuition fees

Tuition fees are non-refundable. However, under special circumstances, students may apply for a reduction or reimbursement of tuition fees. This exception only applies under extreme situations, such as in cases of serious illness.

Each case is evaluated on an individual basis. Students who apply for reimbursement must submit a written request to the Finance Department containing an explanation of the reasons for the request. Furthermore, students must submit all appropriate certificates and documents. The application and all necessary supporting documents, such as a health certificate or other document, shall be sent to innheimta@ru.is

Non-EU/EEA Students – Refund Policy

Students who have received a D visa in their passport, enabling them to enter Iceland based on their studies, are not entitled to any refund of confirmation fees or tuition fees should they withdraw from the program.

Amount of tuition fees and guarantee of fixed price

Tuition fees are determined by the University's budget for each year. Different programmes within the University have different rules regarding fee increases, as the subjects, course material, and price to run the programmes may differ. The fees that you will need to pay will be published before the first application deadline for the programme concerned.

Tuition fees for students who have started studying at the school generally do not increase beyond general price increases until the degree is completed in continuous study. This insurance is valid for up to three years after the student enrols in the relevant degree (it can be longer if the degree is not offered within three years). See the price list of school fees in a table with the amount of school fees, percentage, etc., listed units.

Tuition fees for students who have started studying at the school generally do not increase beyond CPI (Consumer Price Index) related price increases until the degree is completed in continuous study.
