Diploma in Technology

The diploma programmes in Technology are practically oriented and rooted in traditional trades. Each diploma program is 90 ECTS credits and is operated solely as distance learning. Twice during each term, students attend working sessions over a weekend where they perform lab exercises and projects.

Language

Language of instruction is Icelandic.

Length of study

Three years, with work.

Facilities

Students outside the Reykjavik area can get access to local education centers, but students in the Reykjavik area are offered study facilities for group work on the university premises.

Certification

To be certified as a Technician, students must have a Journeyman's Certificate in the field, which will then grant them a Master Craftsmanship Diploma.

Continuing studies: Operating technicians

Students graduating with a Diploma in Technology can go on to complete a 30 ECTS Diploma in Technology - Business Administration. The supplementary diploma is for students who have completed the 90 ECTS Technology Diploma and focuses on operations and production management. Applicants must have completed a diploma in Construction, Electrical or Mechanical Technology.

Graduates of the programme receive the professional title of Operating Technician (Icelandic: rekstrariðfræðingur). It spans two semesters and is operated solely as distance learning. The programme may commence both in the fall and spring semester.

Tracks in Technology - diploma programmes

Construction Technology

The main subjects of study are building construction, computer aided design, strength of materials, structural design, materials science, management and administration.

Careers: Construction Technicians work in architecture and engineering firms, as inspectors or supervisors in the building industry and as managers on construction sites. The main subjects of study are building construction, computer aided design, strength of materials, structural design, materials science, management and administration.

During the course of the Construction Technology program the students add very considerably to their knowledge and competence. In the last semester they complete a final project wherein they demonstrate practical knowledge and professional competence when dealing with technical solutions relating to design, planning and development.

Students graduating with a Diploma in Construction Technology can go on to complete a BSc in Constructing Architecture with an additional 120 ECTS. Graduates can be also be granted a Master Tradesman´s Diploma.

Electrical Technology

The main subjects are in electricity, computer science and operations, combined with a practical final project.

Careers: In industry, electrical technicians work on a variety of tasks such as supervision, production management, operation and administration of enterprises in the field of electrical engineering, and electrical installation design. In addition they design controls for factory equipment, power stations and ships.

To be certified as an Electrical Technician, students must have a Journeyman's Certificate in the field, which will then grant them a Master Craftsmanship Diploma.

Mechanical Technology

The main subjects of study are mechanical studies, statics and mechanics of materials, machine element design, computer-aided drawing, operations, thermodynamics, and a practical final project.

Careers: Mechanical technologist work with diverse projects at engineering firms, such as management, production, operations, and business management in the field of machinery. Furthermore, they carry out supervision with construction, machinery, factory equipment, power plants, and ships.

To be certified as an Mechanical Technician, students must have a Journeyman's Certificate in the field, which will then grant them a Master Craftsmanship Diploma.

Admission

Prospective students must have completed a Journeyman's Examination in that particular field. Additional requirements are 20 FEIN credits in languages (Icelandic, English, and Danish) and 20 FEIN credits in science (math, physics, and chemistry). Applicants with a Matriculation examination from an Icelandic secondary school fulfill these language and science requirements.

To fulfill these academic requirements, students can attend preparatory courses at Reykjavik University's Preliminary Studies, which are specifically designed for Technology students and are taken as distance learning alongside the Technology program.
