BSc Applied Engineering

Students address practical, real-life engineering design problems, under the guidance of our faculty and experts from the local industry. Emphasis is on solid theoretical knowledge in the field and strong design and analysis skillset through practical student projects.

Overview

Applied-EngineeringCredits

210 ECTS.

Language

Language of instruction is Icelandic. A number of courses taught in English are available for visiting exchange students. See the RU course catalogue for more information. The RU International Office also provides information about study programmes for exchange students.

Length of study

Three and a half years, full time.

Certified Engineers (tæknifræðingur)

At the completion of a BSc thesis, graduates receive certification from the Ministry of Industry to practice as fully qualified engineers, with the professional title of certified engineer.

Tracks in Applied Engineering

Applied Civil Engineering

The program provides students with realistic and challenging projects going through all phases from the preliminary design and analysis, design and graphics, as well as preparatory work the the tender documents, project plans, and cost estimates.

The main subjects are mathematics, structural mechanics, metallurgy, geotechnics, and design courses in the fields of concrete, reinforces steel or wood structures, along with pipeline design, project management, and road design. The program concludes with a final project that is completed in cooperation with a company or with one of RU‘s research centers, for instance SEL.

Course Catalogue for Applied Civil Engineering

Careers: Studies in applied civil engineering prepares students for careers related to design and construction and operation of facilities such as roads, buildings, airports, power plants, and ports.

It also includes management of real estate, public governance, management and monitoring of contracting and production companies, along with environmental related positions such as environmental impact assessment, recycling and waste disposal, and environmentally friendly  solutions for the construction industry.

Graduates receive certification from the Ministry of Industry to practice as fully qualified applied engineers, with the professional title of certified engineer (Icelandic: Tæknifræðingur).  At the same time, it is very easy to base studies for a MSc degree on the final examination, either in Iceland or at universities abroad.

Applied Electrical Engineering

The applied electrical engineering program at the School of Science and Engineering is a rigorous program designed to provide students with practical skills in the design of electrical and electronic systems in addition to developing fundamental knowledge in the field.

The program combines electronics, electric power theory, telecommunications, automation, computer technology, heavy industry, and energy technology.

The degree provides students with certification from the Ministry of Industries and Innovation to practice as fully qualified engineers, with the professional title of certified engineer (Icelandic: Tæknifræðingur).
