ML in Law
RU School of Law offers graduate law studies that give students a diverse choice of emphases and courses of study. In that way, they can specialise in particular legal areas and integrate their studies with other disciplines.

Language
Language of instruction is Icelandic and English.
Length of study
Two years, full time. Students must complete the programme no later than four years after registering.
Exceptional Instructors and Academics
Instructors in the Master's programme, Icelandic and international, have all been chosen on the basis of their education, their professional experience, and their skill in teaching and research. In research-based studies, a key element is the guidance of instructors who themselves have completed scientific research studies. Among the instructors guiding students in the Master's programme are nine lawyers with doctoral degrees who currently teach and do research within the School of Law.
Structure
The Master Programme is to a considerable extent based on independent work performed by students under the supervision of instructors (a research-related Master Programme) and a wide variety of choices on emphasis and course of study.
The following can grant credits towards the Master's degree:
- Participation in regular courses.
- Seminars relating to research projects.
- Studies at overseas universities.
- Internships, organized by the School of Law in cooperation with institutions and businesses.
- Master's thesis/project (30 ECTS or 60 ECTS).
In addition, students may within certain limits pursue studies in other fields of academic study than law and receive credits evaluated towards the Master's degree.
A number of courses will be on offer within the Master Programme with a special emphasis on the following:
- International law and international business
- Courts of law and litigation
- Private law
BA degree in Law from Reykjavik University or a compatible law degree is a general requirement for admission to the Master Programme. There is, however, a possibility for students holding different basic qualifications to enter the programme, subject to certain conditions.
Certification to the Legal Profession
Those who finish the Master's programme following an undergraduate degree in law and at least 240 ECTS in legal subjects are deemed to have completed a certification to the legal profession and thus fulfil the general educational requirements needed to work as judges and litigators.
At RU the principal language of instruction is Icelandic. Textbooks are mainly in English. Courses in Masters programme are only open for graduate students on Masters level.
Master's Studies with an International Focus
RU's School of Law actively participates in the expansion which now characterises Icelandic industry by giving students an opportunity to graduate with a Master's degree with an international focus. For students to graduate with a degree in this field of specialisation, they must complete at least 45 ECTS in courses or seminars which focus on international issues, and must furthermore write a Master's thesis with the same emphasis.

Research based
A key issue in research-based studies is to have the guidance of teachers who have themselves completed scientific research studies. Among those who provide guidance in the graduate programme are lawyers with doctoral degrees who now teach and conduct research at Reykjavík University's School of Law. Generally, the programme is completed in two years, that is, over the course of four semesters, but students must have finished the programme no later than four years after registering.
Internship
In master studies, a student can earn credits through an internship and the School of Law endeavours to secure an internship with a suitable institution or company for students who desire to do so. Graduate students may earn up to 7,5 ECTS through accredited internship. A requirement is laid out in the Guidelines on the implementation of masters students' internships that a student shall work under supervision on legal matters and tasks which are verifiably suitable as a means of enhancing the student's knowledge of law and ability to work on the resolution of legal assignments.

Admission
Minimum Requirements: A BA-degree or another comparable university degree in law, a BA-degree, BS-degree or another comparable degree in another field than law.
Students who have not completed undergraduate studies in law have to complete a course in Methodology (8 ECTS) with the grade 6.0 or higher.
In selecting students, whether they have completed undergraduate studies in law or another field, it is taken into account the composition of prior studies, grades at university level and other aspects that are thought to indicate the abilities of applicants to take on demanding research-related master studies in law.
Those who finish the Master's programme following an undergraduate degree in law and at least 240 ECTS in legal subjects are deemed to have completed a certification to the legal profession and thus fulfill the general educational requirements needed to work as judges and litigators.
Master's Degree without Undergraduate Studies in Law
The master's programme is not confined to students who have completed undergraduate studies in law. Students with university degrees in other subjects can complete the programme. Thus, those who have for example a degree in business, economics, medicine, nursing and political studies can complete a master's degree in law.
