MSc in Marketing // Varied studies and good connections with the business world
Rakel Gyða Pálsdóttir, business manager
"MSc degree in Marketing gave me a good understanding of marketing based on a strong theoretical foundation. Through the program, students also develop skills in using data and research in marketing work, which I consider a big advantage," says Rakel Gyða Pálsdóttir, business manager.
Rakel completed her Master's degree in marketing from Reykjavik University in 2020. She says the study was varied, and much effort was put into connecting it to the business world. "We worked on projects in collaboration with Icelandic companies and had guest speakers from the business world visit who spoke about their work. There was much emphasis on active participation in classes and presentations, so you also got good practice in presenting and speaking in front of a group. I also found it a great advantage that the classes take place in the second half of the week and on weekends, and I could study alongside my work at a reduced rate."
Rakel works at a research company, where she carries out diverse projects related to acquiring and maintaining business relationships, promotional work, research design, and product development. After completing her BSc in Psychology, she was unsure of the path she wanted to take regarding her Master's degree. Rakel, therefore, entered the labor market for several years before she decided to pursue a master's degree in marketing, and she then worked as an expert in market research at MMR.
There, I worked a lot with marketing managers and thus got an insight into their diverse work, which sparked my interest in marketing even more. Marketing combines psychology and business science and is about understanding and influencing consumer behavior. I chose marketing because I wanted to use what I had learned in psychology while also expanding my knowledge in the field of business.
Throughout the years, Rakel has worked a lot on research and is therefore particularly interested in data and how best to use data in marketing to maximize results. "I envision myself continuing on that path and working with data-driven marketing in some form." There is so much going on in the profession and rapid changes. But at least I am convinced that the future is bright and exciting," Rakel says with a smile.
Reykjavik University's Department of Business Administration emphasizes excellent teaching, student participation, quality research, and a good connection with industry.
