International students study Icelandic
Several of Reykjavík University‘s international students now attend Icelandic classes at the Department of Preliminary Studies. There are 33 who have been attending the classes; they are from the United States, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Dominica, France, Iran, Ireland, Italy, China, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Romania, Somalia, Turkey, Catalonia, and Switzerland.
Jóhann Björnsson teaches and is assisted by Björg Hilmarsdóttir. The student group is mixed; master's and doctoral students attend the classes twice a week. "The main goal of the classes is to teach the students what is practical and can benefit them immediately. Therefore, the main focus is on speaking the language. We introduce various basics and themes in each lesson, and then for more than half of the lesson, we talk to each other," says Jóhann.
The Icelandic lesson is a pilot project that lasts for six weeks.
