Abstract:
The growing interest in wind power is driven by the need to address climate change and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Wind power offers a promising solution to meet energy demands sustainably. In Iceland, where geothermal energy already plays a significant role, integrating wind energy can diversify and strengthen the renewable energy portfolio. This integration enhances energy security, reduces the need for fossil fuel imports, and creates economic value for the country. By combining wind and geothermal resources, Iceland can move towards a fully renewable energy system, ensuring a stable, resilient and adaptable energy supply for the future.

This study investigates the integration of wind energy with geothermal power in Iceland, aiming to optimize grid stability and enhance the utilization of renewable energy sources. It addresses three key questions: What is the realistic potential for wind energy in the Hengill area? How can wind and geothermal energies be integrated effectively? How can the grid adapt to fluctuating wind energy inputs? These questions were explored using three different simulation tools: windPRO, Time Series Lab (TSL), and PSS/E. The results show that integrating wind farms in the Hengill area indicates potential success. Simulation tools and dynamic testing highlight the effectiveness of these sites for wind power generation and confirm that the grid can sustainably handle these new additions while maintaining operational stability within the required limits. The study also highlights the operational complexities of managing geothermal energy and underscores the importance of maximizing wind energy utilization to justify the high investment costs. The findings suggest that integrating wind and geothermal energy can significantly enhance Iceland's renewable energy landscape, ensuring a stable and efficient energy supply.
