Admission Requirements
General
The Admissions Committee will consider applications from candidates who have either completed their undergraduate degree or are in the final year of their undergraduate studies. Applicants must provide official certification of degree completion. An application is considered complete only when the Admissions Committee has received all necessary supporting documents, including letters of recommendation from both provided referees.

- 2 Letters of Recommendation (sent to ise@ru.is) directly from referee's email)
- Photocopy of Passport (Color)
- Personal Statement (Approximately 500 words outlining your motivation and career goals.)
- English Language Test Score Certificate (if applicable, please see Language Tab)

Program Specific
Each program offered by the Iceland School of Energy has specific requirements, outlined in the programme descriptions.
M.Sc. Sustainable Energy
The Sustainable Energy program is open for students with a bachelor's degree in various disciplines. Our students come from backgrounds in business, engineering, social sciences, and natural sciences.
In particular, an undergraduate degree in one of the following disciplines is beneficial:
- Business
- Public Policy and Social Sciences
- Economics
- Engineering
- Geology
- Geography
The recommended grade point average (GPA) for admission is 8 out of 10 on the Icelandic selected grade point scale, which is equivalent to a GPA of 3.25 out of 4 on the U.S. scale.
M.Sc. Sustainable Energy Engineering
The Sustainable Energy Engineering program is open to students with an undergraduate degree in relevant fields of study. Our students typically come from engineering, physics, mathematics, and environmental sciences backgrounds.
In particular, an undergraduate degree in one of the following disciplines is beneficial:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Aerospace Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Nuclear Engineering

M.Sc. Electric Power Management
The degree is open for students with a bachelor's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and other related fields. A background in power systems and circuit analysis is recommended.
M.Sc. Electric Power Engineering
The degree is open for students with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and related fields. A background in power systems and circuit analysis is recommended.
To graduate with a master's degree in engineering and become a chartered engineer in Iceland, students must fulfill requirements set forth by the Ministry of Industries and Innovation. See here for more information.
Energy Field School
The summer energy field school is open to all applicants whom are at least entering their final year of undergraduate education. Graduate students and professionals with completed degrees are also welcome to apply.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must provide proof of their proficiency in English.
- A minimum TOEFL test score of 577 (paper-based test) is required (230 in the computer-based test, 91 in the internet-based test)
- IELTS score of at least 6.5 (academic only)
- DAAD Language Certificate with at least B2
- Cambridge Certificate with at least B2
English Language Requirements are Waived if:
- The applicant's first language is English.
- The applicant has completed a higher education degree where the language of instruction was English (minimum requirement 3 years full-time). A certificate from the university will be required for confirmation.
- Countries exempted from English skills requirements: Due to equal national admission requirements for universities in countries like Iceland: Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark.
