The International Carbon Conference hosted by Reykjavik Energy

REYKJAVIK, SEPTEMBER 13 – The International Carbon Conference(ICC) is taking place from the 10th of September to the 14th. This conference brought together professionals and experts in carbon capture to discuss the current projects in place to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions. Ragna Björk Bragadóttir, an Iceland School of Energy Student who worked at Orkuveita Reykjavikur (OR) over the summer is the manager of the conference and played a large role in putting together the conference. The five major networks in attendance were CarbFix, S4CE, Metal-Aid, Deep Carbon Observatory, and CarbonSAFE.

As the need to address the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere becomes more pressing, a need to approach the issue from different avenues simultaneously emerges. Traditionally, we look to energy companies to reduce their emissions. But what about the CO2 already in the atmosphere? The ICC brought together researchers to present their solutions to lower CO2 emissions.

To introduce what is going on in Iceland in terms of CSS, Edda Sif P. Aradóttir gave a talk at ICC where she discussed the history of CarbFix . As the Project Manager of international CarbFix, she has unique insight into the project based in Iceland and part of OR.

CarbFix is the process of capturing emitted CO2, dissolving it in water and injecting it into basaltic geological formations. This process permanently removes CO2 from the atmosphere by turning the injected carbon dioxide into rock in under two years. Risk is reduced in this process as compared to other carbon capture and storage methods by storing the CO2 in less reactive rock formations. Apart from safe the project is also financially feasible; the overall cost of the carbon capture process comes down to less than 25USD/ton.
