Dr. Susanne Durst, professor at the Department of Business and Economics at Reykjavik University, is the editor of a new book called Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) Resilience – Strategies for Risk and Crisis Management. Dr Thomas Henshcel, professor at Hochschule für Technik und Wirtscaft in Berlin, is also the editor of the book, which is published by Springer.

The book focuses on resilience in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Susanne says that the book is a logical development of earlier books on the topics of knowledge risk management and crisis management, which were also published by Springer and also focused on SMEs.

"The main motivation for the present book was that SMEs are considered particularly vulnerable to the consequences of internal and external crises. Existing empirical evidence suggests that SMEs are less resilient in crisis situations due to their often more limited assets and resources as well as their greater dependence on local customers. The book provides an in-depth introduction to resilience in and for SMEs. It covers different small firms and sectors to consider the heterogeneity of small business resilience practices. These contextual differences give interested readers unique mutual comparative research and learning opportunities," says Susanne.

To our knowledge, this is the first book with a dedicated focus on resilience in SMEs; it presents contributions from authors from different parts of the world, and it provides insights from different types of small organizations and sectors,

says Susanne.

She hopes that the content of the book will be used in courses at RU that deal with topics such as small business management, entrepreneurship, strategic management, crisis/risk management, change management or sustainable business management/development.

RU's library has the book, and it is available to staff and students online through ProQuest Ebook Central.
