Admission Requirements and Accompanying Documents

BA, BSc, BEd, and Diploma Programmes


Applicants need to have completed a matriculation examination, another comparable education, or possess equivalent maturity and knowledge in the opinion of administrators in the respective department. In evaluating applications, the factors considered are: grades on matriculation examination, further education, professional experience, participation in extracurricular activities, and fields of interest. Applicants are therefore encouraged to specify everything they feel may benefit their application.

Note to applicants to the School of Computer Science and the School of Science and Engineering:

Students applying for admission to programmes in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical and Energy Engineering (Icelandic: tæknifræði) should send accompanying documents to Menntavegur 1, 101 Reykjavik. The same applies to students applying for admission to programmes in Technology and to the Department of Preliminary Studies. However, students applying for admission to programmes in Engineering Management, Financial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering (Icelandic: verkfræði) should send accompanying documents to Menntavegur 1, 101 Reykjavik. Applicants to the School of Computer Science should also send accompanying documents to that address.



Note to applicants to the Department of Preliminary Studies

What needs to accompany applications to the Department of Preliminary Studies?

For those who have completed vocational training:

  • Official transcript of Certificate of Completion.
  • If the applicant has completed a Journeyman's Certificate, a transcript of the Certificate shall accompany the application.

For those who have not completed vocational training:
  • Official transcript of academic records.
  • Employment certificate

For those who have completed a matriculation examination and apply for additional studies in mathematics and science.
  • Official transcript of matriculation examination



Note to applicants to the MBA and MSc Programmes at the School of Business

Applicants need to have completed a university degree or a comparable education. As a general rule, applicants to the MBA programme should possess three years' professional experience. Professional experience is however not required for the MSc programme. Further education and job experience can benefit applicants in the evaluation process.



What needs to accompany applications to BA, BS, BEd, and Diploma programmes?
  • Official transcript of matriculation examination.
  • Official transcripts of grades from other schools if courses are being evaluated.
  • Information on other education.

If applicants have not completed a matriculation examination but believe that their previous studies are comparable, they need to submit a summary of their academic performance at the school in question.

  • Other documents may accompany applications but are not required.

In addition to a matriculation examination, further education and professional experience can benefit applications. Applicants can choose to submit a CV and recommendations along with their application.

What needs to accompany applications to Technology programmes?

  • Academic records
  • Journeyman's Certificate or Master Tradesman's Certificate
  • Professional background (recommendations are a plus)



What needs to accompany applications to the MBA programme?

All applicants must submit an electronic application and attach the required accompanying documents.

  • Curriculum Vitae with picture (CV)
  • Official transcripts of diplomas
  • Two personal statements:
  1. Why do you want to pursue an MBA (up to 500 words)?
  2. Discuss your short term and long term goals post MBA (up to 500 words).
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can assess the applicant's ability to participate successfully in the programme. The letters can be in either English or Icelandic. Letters of recommendation shall be submitted directly to RU in a sealed envelope.



What needs to accompany applications to MSc programmes at the School of Business?

  • Original or official transcripts of grades and diplomas.
  • Other documents may accompany applications but are not required. In addition to a university degree, further education and professional experience can benefit applications. Applicants can choose to submit a CV and recommendations along with their application.


What needs to accompany applications to MSc programmes at the School of Science and Engineering?

  • Original or official transcripts of grades and diplomas.
  • Information about two references: Name, phone number, e-mail address, company, and position.
  • A “statement of purpose” which describes the future plans of the applicant and how the MSc program can help the applicant reach his or her goals. (part of electronic application or in an attached document).


What needs to accompany applications to MSc programmes at the School of Computer Science

  • Official transcripts of university diplomas. A statement of the ranking of the applicant with respect to other graduates from the respective programme is useful, where available.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members (or others), who are familiar with the academic abilities of the applicant.
  • A “statement of purpose” which describes the future plans of the applicant and how the MSc program at Reykjavík University can help the applicant reach his or her goals.
  • Any additional information that can aid in the assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant.

Accompanying documents should be delivered to the office of RU at Menntavegur 1, 101 Reykjavik.
