Deep water running as part of training program for footballers

9.2.2018

Physical Activity, Physical Education, Sport and Health (PAPESH) Reserach Centre of Reykjavik University (RU) in collaboration with University of Jyvaskyla (JYV) and Breiðablik football club with support from Icelandic football association (KSI) is conducting and Randomized Control Trial (RCT) on possible benefits of deep water running (DWR) for fit footballers playing competitively.

In early January about 50 girls, all from Breiðabilk football club, were measured in VO2max , jumping height, speed, agility and kicking speed. After the initial measurements, the group was split into two equal groups. All the girls train football together three times a week, and then they have three 45 minutes endurance session as well.  One group trains on land, with typical running interval training and the other group trains in the water doing intervals in DWR.

Students from RU and JYV are responsible for conduction the intervention guided by their professors. After seven weeks of intervention, in early mars 2018, both groups will be measured again and the groups compared. A possible outcome of this could help coaches who work with the land based athlete to alter their training programs to maximize outcome but reduce the unwanted load on the skeletal system. The students from RU and JYV, involved are Ella Nurmi, Eyþór Ernir Odsson, Fanney Þóra Þórsdóttir, Guðný Erna Bjarnadóttir, Gunnar Egill Benonýsson. The professors are Ben Waller (JYV), Ingi Þór Einarsson (RU) and Jose M. Saavedra (RU).
