21.10.2024 : Success and Continued Cooperation: Iceland School of Energy and the University of Bucharest

The Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavik University, in partnership with the University of Bucharest, presented the success of the ITRES project at the EEA Grants closing conference. Funded by the EEA Grants, ITRES combined online learning and fieldwork in both Iceland and Romania, focusing on renewable energy technologies. This project has laid the foundation for continued collaboration, including new initiatives like the SEGES and GeoThermal Bridge Initiative .

24.10.2023 : Iceland's Women's Strike: Empowering Energy Equality

In a groundbreaking display of unity, Iceland's women and non-binary individuals, including the Prime Minister, convened for a full-day strike on October 24, demanding an end to the nation's enduring gender pay gap and widespread gender-based violence. Despite Iceland's global reputation for gender equality, disparities persist, with some female professionals earning 21% less than their male counterparts. This powerful strike coincides with global efforts to promote gender equality in the energy sector, where women represent just 16% of the workforce. The Iceland School of Energy (ISE) is dedicated to this cause, offering a Women in Energy Scholarship and achieving a 66% female enrollment rate.

27.5.2023 : Bridging the Gap between Classroom Learning and Real-world Sustainability at Mannvit

First-year Iceland School of Energy (ISE) student Diego Augusto Costa successfully transitioned from academic learning to real-world application, securing an internship with leading engineering firm Mannvit after connecting with ISE alumnus and Mannvit engineer, Kristján Vilbergsson. At Mannvit, Diego applies his academic knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges, producing life cycle assessment reports and earning credits towards his Masters degree. Diego's journey exemplifies the power of initiative and the valuable connections fostered within the ISE community, and he looks forward to potentially completing his thesis project under Mannvit's guidance.

6.1.2023 : Good coffee will make you feel at home

Andrés Laverde graduated with a master's degree in Sustainable Energy from ISE (Iceland School of Energy) at Reykjavik University this May. Andrés comes from Bogotá in Colombia and graduated with a BSc in Geosciences from Los Andes University in Bogotá. During his studies, he grew a great interest in volcanology, energy, and sustainability and focused on research on volcanology and geothermal resources.

REYKJAVIK, June 1 - MSc in Sustainable Energy candidate, Silvana Loayza Leon, successfully defended her master's thesis where she performs a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of selected Blue Lagoon skincare products. BUCHAREST, October 10 - Our second year ISE students recently had an opportunity to visit Romania as part of a special class through the "Innovative Teaching Methods for Tomorrows' Renewable Specialists" (ITRES) EEA program. This program was launched on October 1st, 2020, as a joint effort between the Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavik University and the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest.

9.12.2020 : The 42nd New Zealand Geothermal Workshop

REYKJAVIK, December 09 - Late last month ISE Director Dr. Juliet Newson had the chance to meet up with Contact Energy NZ Ltd geothermal reservoir engineers Nataly Castillo-Ruiz and Dr. Katie McLean at the 42nd New Zealand Geothermal Workshop. This year the workshop was held at beautiful Paihia in northern New Zealand, which is near the Ngawha Geothermal field. Being the longest-running energy conference in New Zealand, this event showcases keynote speakers, short course opportunities, and chances to interact with the geothermal community from New Zealand and around the world.

Our second year students are hard at work on their research projects, our first year students are wrapping up their exams and our prospective students are putting together their applications. The winter holidays are just around the corner and so too is the new year. With many of us cautiously hopeful for the new year, we wanted to reground ourselves, and asked our students to recall what attracted them to ISE in the first place. Second year student Rachel Brophy gave us this open letter to anyone looking to start at ISE, and we just had to share it.

26.10.2020 : The 2020 Arctic Innovation Lab

REYKJAVIK, October 26 - Each year, the Arctic Innovation Lab has been held as part of The Arctic Circle conference, where students pitch ideas that help promote sustainable development in the Arctic. This year, the event took to a digital stage, and was held on October 9th on Zoom. The lab showcased fresh new ideas from politicians, leaders, and students active in the field and was co-organized by the Arctic Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center in partnership with the Luleå University of Technology, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and the Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavík University.  

18.9.2020 : Madison's work with the Natural History Museum of Iceland

REYKJAVIK, September 18 - This summer, Iceland School of Energy students have been busy. Whether it’s attending summer school, performing preliminary research for a thesis project, or working on an interesting job, our students have found ways to stay engaged. For current ISE Sustainable Energy student Madison MacKenzie, her summer was full of hands-on experience in the Eastfjords of Iceland. 

15.9.2020 : MSc Thesis: Corporate Social Responsibility in the Shipping/Maritime Industry and Shipping Container Repurposing/Recycling

REYKJAVIK, September 15 - MSc in Sustainable Energy candidate, Veronica Martin, successfully defended her master's thesis where she researched the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the shipping/maritime industry with respects to shipping container repurposing/recycling. Veronica's work was supervised by R. Morgan Greene from Reykjavik university.

11.9.2020 : MSc Thesis: Numerical Modelling of the Shallow Reinjection and Tracer Transport at Nesjavellir Geothermal System, Iceland. An Assessment of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow

REYKJAVIK, September 09 - MSc in Sustainable Energy candidate, Esteban Gomez, successfully defended his master's thesis where he performed numerical modelling of the shallow reinjection and tracer transport at the Nesjavellir Geothermal System, in Iceland. Through this, he made an assessment of the heat transfer and fluid flow of the area. Esteban's research was supervised by Juliet Newson and Samuel Warren Scott from Reykjavik University, as well as Thomas M.P. Ratouis from Orkuveita Reykjavíkur ( Reykjavik Energy ).
