The GREEN Program Emerging Sustainability Leaders Soiree: Student Receives Trailblazer Award for Bold Impact on Industry

30.4.2015

Cari Covell, MSc Sustainable Energy Engineering '16, recently attended The GREEN Program Emerging Sustainability Leaders Soiree on behalf of the Iceland School of Energy. The event is designed to bring together change-makers in the industry in order for them to share their stories and promote their passions. As a 2-time alumnae of The GREEN Program, Cari received the trailblazer award for her work thus far in the Iceland School of Energy; paving the way for future students to succeed in renewable energy and sustainability related work.

“It was the first time an award made specifically for alumni was given, and I feel very honoured to receive the highest recognition of the night, for doing what I love…studying my passion of conducting cutting edge research in renewable energy”, as Cari comments on her accomplishment. She adds how the award is personal and meaningful as she has spent time working with The GREEN Program on several occasions over the past 4 years.

Cari has led the way for future students to make an impact on the world, by completing rigorous coursework specializing in geothermal engineering, an internship for writing a Tracer Flow Test manual with Iceland GeoSurvey, and becoming a mentor for incoming GREEN students during their capstone work. She mentions how the Iceland School of Energy has been a great fit for her studies, by saying, “The opportunities are endless…I'm always up for a challenge to complete meaningful work in order to make my mark on the industry and pass on the skills I've learned to future students”.

Cari Covell:“I'm always up for a challenge to complete meaningful work in order to make my mark on the industry and pass on the skills I've learned to future students”.

At the Emerging Sustainability Leaders Soiree, Cari became a spokesperson for the Iceland School of Energy by presenting her experiences thus far in the master's programme; including networking engagements with professionals, trips for fieldwork, and fun activities around Iceland such as swimming in geothermal hot springs. Her goal was for all attendees of the Soiree to understand and learn more about her journey towards receiving a master's degree. Cari adds, “Everyone loved the photos and video I put together during my time thus far in Iceland, and by the end of the night, everyone knew my name and my story. It was an incredible experience, and I hope to attend more events in the years to come”.

Cari reflects on her time at the event as a “fun and exciting experience…I love to learn more about developing research by meeting new people and expanding my professional network”. Plans for Cari in the future include completing her master's thesis and applying for PhD programs in geothermal reservoir engineering. Overall, she anticipates fostering more relations in the future between The GREEN Program and the Iceland School of Energy.
