Emergency services at Reykjavík University

While working with reactive substances in a chemistry laboratory at Reykjavík University last night, the ventilation system in a fume hood stopped working, which resulted in small amounts of gases being released into the room.

The person who was working responded in the appropriate way and called the emergency services immediately. A security guard on duty at the university initiated an evacuation, as nearly one hundred people were in the building.

The evacuation was carried out successfully, and measurements by the emergency services showed no contamination neither in the chemistry laboratory nor in nearby rooms. After the measurement, people were allowed back into the school. The person who was working went to the emergency room for observation.
