Challenging the prevailing understanding that knowledge is inherently positive

Managing Knowledge Risks, an HSTtalk by Dr Susanne Durst, Professor at RU‘s Department of Business and Economics, has been released. This talk is designed for classroom instruction or self-study at the university level. It is aimed at business students, as well as any other students interested in knowledge management or related subjects, such as risk management. One may access the talk here.

By focusing on potential risks associated with knowledge, the talk challenges the prevailing understanding that knowledge is inherently positive. Through the combination of theory and a case study tailored to the content of the talk, the listener learns what is meant by knowledge risks and why these should be taken into account in organizations in order to better manage the resource of knowledge. The learning is supported by visual and auditory stimuli.

Says Dr Durst, looking back at a very successful year for her personally.

I'm not only pleased that this talk has now been published, but also that two books I developed together with colleagues have also been released. One of them is Knowledge Management at the Crossroads, Navigating Risks and Benefits. My colleague Yasmina Khadir and I believe that this book should be relevant for all readers interested in knowledge management (KM), that it not only provides a concise introduction to the topic, compares it to other topics, and differentiates it from them, but also addresses the latest developments such as knowledge risks and responsible KM, and their potential contributions to the world today. The second one is this: Inclusive and Responsible Entrepreneurship in a Turbulent Era. My colleagues and I hope that this book will provide food for thought to further emphasize the importance of entrepreneurship for urgently needed improvements at the societal level. The topic of knowledge also plays an important role in this book.

Says Dr Durst, adding that, based on this, she hopes 2026 will also bring a multitude of interesting projects with several concrete ones already in the pipeline.

Dr Durst’s research interests include knowledge (risk) management, innovation management, sustainable business development, and responsible digitalisation, particularly in conjunction with smaller entrepreneurial organisations. She has led several international research projects, and her work has been recognised through different awards, including an Emerald Literati Award "Outstanding Paper" in 2020 and 2023. This April, she was also ranked number 1 in Iceland on Research.com‘s 2025 Edition of the Ranking of Best Scientists in the field of Business and Management.
