Overview

The MSc programme in Civil Engineering with specialisation in Structural Design focuses on both practical and theoretical aspects of structural analysis and design. Emphasis is also on the interaction of building materials and design, as well as specialised aspects of the physics of buildings.  There is major emphasis on innovation in the search for technical solutions and the development of new methods in the design of structures and in the use of building materials. Students focus on the interaction of engineering and architecture, the interaction of  building materials and design, as well as structural analysis and specialised aspects of the physics of buildings.  There is also a major emphasis on innovation in the search for technical solutions and the development of new methods and sustainable solutions in the design of structures and in the use of building materials.

After successful completion of the programme the student is awarded the degree Master of Science in Civil engineering with specialisation in structural design. The programme is designed to meet the curriculum requirements for the  professional title of chartered engineer (Icelandic: verkfræðingur), as defined by the Ministry of industry and the Association of chartered engineers in Iceland.

Structure

The MSc in Civil Engineering in Structural Design (Structural Engineering) is a 120 ECTS degree and is taken over 4 semesters (2 years) of full-time study. Most courses are 6-8 ECTS, students generally take four or five courses each semester.

Students take 90 ECTS in specialised courses and a 30 ECTS thesis. In exceptional cases, they may take 60 ECTS in courses and a 60 ECTS thesis with a stronger research focus.

Admission requirements

MSc Civil Engineering with Structural Design

 
  • Undergraduate degree

Admission requirements are a BSc degree in engineering. Minimum requirements in applied
sciences (i.e. mathematics, physics) have to be fulfilled. Minimum requirements in basic
subjects fundamental to Civil Engineering generally (i.e. mechanics, material science, etc.) as
well as to Structural Engineering specifically have to be fulfilled.

  • English language requirements
    If English is not your first language, you will need a recognised English Language qualification to be admitted onto any of the University's degree programmes.

Acceptable minimum qualifications include:

IELTS an overall band of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each component skill
TOEFL of 87 (with no less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing)

Other English Language qualifications are also accepted.
