MSc Civil Engineering

The programme has a strong focus on the interaction of building materials and design, as well as specialised aspects of the physics of buildings and the development of new methods and sustainable solutions. Research areas are concrete technology and materials science, and structural analysis and design.

Concrete Technology and Structural Design

Research is a part of almost all courses and is conducted in all main fields of concrete science i.e. rheology, micro-structure, mechanical properties including fracture mechanics, high performance concrete including self-compacting concrete and durability of concrete. The MSc programme in Civil Engineering emphasises innovation in the search for technical solutions and the development of new methods in the design of structures and the use of building materials.

Stuents focus on the interaction of engineering and architecture, the interaction of  building materials and design, as well as structural analysis.

There is a large contribution to the programme from visiting professors and invited lecturers who are leading specialists in their respective fields. There is also emphasis on cooperation with industry for final thesis work.


The goal of the programme is to prepare students for leading careers in industry and/or further academic study. After successful completion of the programme the student is awarded the degree Master of Science in Civil engineering with specialization in concrete technology. The programme is designed to meet the curriculum requirements for the professional title of chartered engineer (Icelandic: verkfræðingur), as defined by the Ministry of industry and the Association of chartered engineers in Iceland.


The MSc programme in Civil Engineering is a 2 year full-time graduate study program of 120 ECTS credits (4 semesters, 30 ECTS each semester).

Courses are 3-8 ECTS credits, usually run as intensive courses.

Students generally take 60 ECTS in specialized courses and a 60 ECTS research-based thesis. A 90 ECTS thesis is optional.

Undergraduate degree 

BSc degree in Engineering. Minimum requirements in applied sciences (i.e. mathematics, physics) and in basic subjects fundamental to civil engineering generally (i.e. mechanics, material science, etc.) as well as to concrete technology specifically have to be fulfilled.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need a recognised English Language qualification to be admitted onto any of the University's degree programmes.

Acceptable minimum qualifications include:

  • IELTS an overall band of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each component skill
  • TOEFL of 87 (with no less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing)

Other English Language qualifications are also accepted.
