Train your leadership techniques
This programme revolves around two workshops, one is a course and the other a training camp – both focusing on leadership techniques and crisis management under volatile circumstances (VUCA). Students from all RU departments can apply but priority is given to School of Science and Engineering students as the programme serves to develop teaching material for engineering students.

  • You can develop some reflexes and define/apply a procedure to react best during complex situation and formalize rules to improve reliability
  • You can prepare a navigation for a 1-day coastal cruise in Brittany under environmental constraints of weather, weather, currents and tides, while justifying its strengths and minimizing the risks according to the crew and the material failures (improve reliability)
  • You can create cohesion using leadership techniques, crisis management and seamanship

Why apply?

  • Demanding but entertaining projects that require collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • A unique experience that is also beneficial for your CV.
  • 2 ECTS credits - as this is a registered course at RU School of Science and Engineering.
  • A chance to meet French, Spanish, and Scottish students of the same age who are also in Brest to learn and have fun, 16 in total.

About VUCA
Professional environments are more than ever VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex og ambiguous). The courses train students to make decisions and react in unexpected and unpredictable situations and reflect real-life nautical scenarios with a high level of complexity and time pressure, where specific skills are to be acquired or reinforced, such as risk and priority management, watchfulness, and team management.

Course 1 - February 11 - 15, 2019
Organised by the Naval Academy. Students go through activities and theoretical approach about collective decision-making and do exercises on decision making (historical naval battle) targeted on a low to high magnitude level of the VUCA criteria.

Course 2 - March 4 - 8, 2019
Organised by the IMT Atlantique Engineering University. The workshop trains students with real-life nautical scenarios, at sea. Students work on their strengths as individuals and as a part of a group through exercises in decision making and leadership training.

How to apply
Application deadline for the first course is December 18th 2018, the deadline for course nr. 2 is February 5th, 2019. One student can apply for both courses. Please send e-mail to nemendabokhald@ru.is
