Grant for Exceptional First-Year Students

Reykjavik University awards exceptional first-year students with a grant in their first semester at the school. The grant covers tuition fees for students' first semester as well as ISK 160.000 for living expenses (in 2008).

  • All first-year students who apply for admission to RU and have an average grade of more than 8.0 on their matriculation examination can apply for the grant. 35 first-year students receive the grant.
  • In order to apply for the grant, students first need to apply for admission to RU.
  • Only students starting a 3 year BS/BA programme can apply for the grant.
  • Selection of grant recipients is based on the content of their matriculation examination with a view towards desirable preparation for the programme they wish to pursue. In addition, students' personal statement in their application will be looked at.
  • Applicants for the grant receive an answer in the middle of June.
  • The living expense grant is paid in two parts; the first part in September and the second part at the end of the examination period in December.
  • The grant selection committee is composed of the Director of Academic Affairs, the Director of Student Services, and the Executive Director of Human Resources and Quality.


The aim of the grant is to encourage exceptional students to be ambitious in their studies and to make it easier for them to devote themselves to the task.
