For 20 years, ERASMUS has supported various collaborations at the university level. The aim is to increase European cooperation among universities and to reinforce the European dimension in higher education. Icelanders began participating in the programme in 1992. The ERASMUS programme involves students, teachers, university staff, and universities as a whole.

Conditions for ERASMUS teacher and staff exchange
-
Teachers should stay at the host school/institution for at least 5 workdays or teach at least 5 hours. All forms of teaching are acceptable. The maximum length of a stay is 6 weeks, but grants will never amount to more than 2.000 Euros.
-
Staff training must take place over at least 5 workdays and may take various forms.
-
To apply for an ERASMUS grant, teachers must work at the respective school, but tenure is not required (part-time teachers).
Application process
1. Teacher/staff member submits an application and receives a reply soon after the application arrives at the school's International Relations Office. Information about the date of the exchange does not have to be in place when the application is submitted, but the agenda of the visit should however be fairly clear, and a letter of invitation from the host school/institution must be enclosed.
2. When the agenda of the visit has become clear, the teaching or training plan, as appropriate, should be prepared (see links to documents below). This, in addition to travel expense information, must be in place for an agreement to be completed. If possible, the above-mentioned information should be submitted immediately along with the application.
3. When it is clear what the duration of the exchange will be, and when the price of airline tickets has been confirmed, this same information should be sent to the home school.
4. An agreement (form) is made between the grant recipient and the home school. The grant is then deposited into the recipient's account.
What is included in an ERASMUS grant for teachers?
-
Travel grant, flight to and from Iceland fully paid, up to 1.000 Euros.
-
Living expense grant, ca. 85-110 Euros per day in allowance (varies depending on length of stay and destination).
In all EU education programmes, the general principle applies that a grant is included in total cost. The total amount of a grant never exceeds 2.000 Euros.
The grant is thus paid
-
80% of the grant is paid out when the agreement is signed,
-
20% of the grant is paid out after the final report and supporting documents (cf. below) have been submitted.
Final report
After their stay has come to an end, grant recipients need only to prepare a final report online given that the respective teaching or training plan was deemed satisfactory. If the teaching or training plan was incomplete, a confirmation of the stay from the host school/institution should be submitted. The confirmation should contain a description of the stay.
